After John and Paul had returned from a hitch-hiking trip to Paris, where they had celebrated John's birthday and watched a few bands perform, the Beatles appeared at the Albany Cinema, Northway, Maghull, Liverpool. This was a  3 hour, Sunday afternoon charity matinee and included a wide variety of performers in aid of the St. John Ambulance Brigade (Waterloo Ambulance & Nursing Divisions).
Promoted by Jim Gretty (yes, the same Jim Gretty that sold John his first guitar at Hessy's music store in 1957), there were a total of 16 acts that perfomed at this charity event. Also in attendance was the Mayor of Crosby, Alderman F.T. Sutton J.P.

The compare for the event was Arthur Scott.
